Corfu is a city on the Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea, the second largest of the Ionian islands.  The city of Corfu is the capital of the island and serves as its principal city. The island’s population currently stands around 101,500 inhabitants.  

Corfu is renowned for its history, culture, olive groves and vineyards, as well as being a popular tourist destination thanks to its strong transport links. Corfu is shaped by contrasting periods of its history, dating back to 1300 BC. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the biggest square in south-eastern Europe, featuring Roman architecture, temples, castles, churches, green spaces and gardens. Culturally, Corfu has a long musical, theatrical and operatic tradition, and is home to numerous museums and libraries, theatres and religious sites. 

Corfu’s economy is largely based on tourism, mostly from the UK, Scandinavia and Germany. Its port has once again become a prominent hub thanks to the olive oil industry.

To improve and simplify the lives of its citizens, the Mayor of Corfu is committed to bringing the island into the digital era through e-governance. Through digital solutions, local authorities hope to enhance citizens’ access to local government, increase citizens’ contribution to decision-making and improve the provision of public services.
