Ventspils is a Latvian port city, sitting on the edge of the Baltic Sea. Having made the strategic decision to adopt an industrialisation policy in 2002, the city has transitioned from transport to a multi-sectoral economy.

Ventspils aims to become a top European hub for smart technologies and substantially increase the ICT sector’s contribution to the city’s economy. Each year, the city organises its own Digital Cities Challenge to encourage students to take on IT challenges. The program seeks to help inspire young people to pursue a career in IT, while also equipping them with the necessary skills to pursue a career in this dynamic field.

Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the City Council established the Ventspils Digital Centre. Its core objective is to provide both education and resources to citizens and businesses, while also developing innovative digital solutions for a smart city.

For Ventspils, the chance to empower citizens with knowledge and resources is key to developing an intelligent city for the future.

Ventspils was a challenger city in the DCC.
