Gijón is a large coastal city in northern Spain, and the largest city in the Principality of Asturias Region. Located in the Bay of Biscay, the port is at the centre of many local businesses. Apart from port-related activities, the economy is based on tourism, steel, other metallurgy, livestock rearing and fisheries.
Gijón is a city on the rise with a growth strategy that focuses on the development of knowledge and innovation. The city was awarded the Biosphere Destination Certification by the Responsible Tourism Institute, to recognise its efficient tourist management and has seen a 44.2% increase in visitors over the last four years.
Gijón has created the “Knowledge Mile”, a geographic space inside the eastern district of the city that hosts several enterprises and public institutions focused on knowledge development. This hub aims to foster synergies between different sectors by bridging technology and science with art and culture.
Gijón was a participant city in the DCC.
