Derry-Londonderry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland. It is the ‘Capital of the North West Crossborder Region’, the largest viable city-region encompassing the Republic of Ireland and the UK. With over a third of its population under the age of 25, it is one of the most youthful city-regions in the European Union.
The city once led the world in the textile industry but has been repositioning itself as one of the most creative, cultural and innovative areas in Ireland - in life sciences, tourism, engineering, digital and creative industries. Ulster University, with a campus in the city, is ranked in the top 3% of universities in the world and invests €47 million in research and innovation programmes each year.
Through its digital transformation plan the city plans to stem the outflow of local talent. To do this, the city is looking to improve transport links to other parts of Ireland, tackle its carbon footprint, and reduce health inequalities with the rest of the region.
Already involved in the Startdust programme, Derry-Londonderry is working on integrating intelligent solutions for energy, mobility and ICT and solutions to make citizens the driving elements of local communities.
