The Coastal Towns Association represents seven towns on Italy’s coast, in the province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region of central eastern Italy. From north to south, the cities consist of Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto, Giulianova, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Silvi Marina and Pineto – all members of the ICC consortium.

The “seven sisters” already have a strong tourism industry thanks to their blue seas and golden (sometimes silver) beaches. Digitalisation and smart technologies are effective means to harness these strengths by developing smart and sustainable tourism in the region.

The seven sisters have been awarded the “Blue Flag” Ecolabel for the water quality of many of their beaches. Each one of the cities have strived to retain their own unique characteristics, ensuring they each remain attractive to tourists. In a region famous for fishing and farming, there is good food and drink to be enjoyed, but also medieval villages to explore with the area’s many walkways and cycle tracks.

The seven cities have much to gain by adopting smart, data-driven technologies. As popular seaside destinations, they could become an example of a new and modern form of tourism.
