Bistrița is a Romanian city located in the Carpathian Mountains, in northern Transylvania. The city is an important regional learning and cultural centre, as the home to seven university faculties, as well as heritage sites dating back to the Middle Ages. It has a diverse economy, counting numerous sectors from manufacturing, to agriculture and tourism.

With about 40% of its workforce still employed in the manufacturing sector, Bistrița’s is involved in electro-technology, textiles, glassware, plastics, food processing and heavy machinery. One of the city’s main industries is the production of lead batteries and accumulators.

Following the 2008 economic crisis, the city joined the Making Spend Matter movement to try and ensure that public spending benefits the whole city, helping address structural economic issues.

The city has been actively moving towards a smart and sustainable future, pursuing projects on zero carbon cities and active citizens under the umbrella of URBACT’s Action Planning Network.
