The city of Almería, located in the southeast of the region of Andalusia (Spain) is a Mediterranean coastal-port city with a population of 201,322. It is the centre of the Almeria County and includes part of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. The city of Almería stands out for its high innovation, fundamentally associated with agri-business, with an ecosystem where knowledge and entrepreneurship have been essential in its competitiveness.

Almería champions the concept of a quadruple helix in fostering innovation, fostering partnerships among public authorities, private enterprises, academic institutions, innovation hubs, and the public. The municipal government, recognising its pivotal role in this endeavour, has formulated a Strategic Plan (PEAL2030) to achieve the city’s goals, and has actively engaged experts in shaping collaborative alliances among stakeholders.

While the city has not yet begun the process of implementing a Local Green Deal, they are committed to the European pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They aim to do this through their PEAL2030 programme, focusing on agriculture systems and improving urban resilience of the built environment by reducing GHG emissions form buildings and transport.

Through the ICC programme the city wants to promote a vision of Almería as a world production benchmark with efficient management of land, water and energy and highly innovative. A cultural, talented and inclusive metropolis that attracts knowledge, companies and visitors. It aims to do this while maintaining a mission to position Almeria as an example of a city that is committed to innovation, capable of making the most of the talent and opportunities offered by its resources, its history and its people.
