Algeciras is located in the extreme south of Spain and serves as the main link between Europe and Africa. Algeciras’s economic activities are heavily reliant on its port, industries and services.

Ranking the fifth largest in Europe in terms of goods and container traffic, the Port of Algeciras is the most frequently used port in Spain, with 5.3 million people passing through each year. The Algeciras City Council has launched its Algeciras Smart City Master Plan, to promote innovation and the use of advanced technologies to develop a new economic model that improves the smart management of the city.

The city is a pioneer of the Urban Agenda for Andalusia 2030, led by the Andalusian Federation of Town and Provincial Councils (FAMP). The agenda envisions a municipal planning approach that will enable social inclusion, improve the quality of life of its citizens and foster the sustainable development of the local economy.

Algeciras was a participant city in the DCC.
